Frequent Urination: Is it Diabetes or Prostate Cancer? Expert Doctor Reveals How to Identify the Cause and When to Seek Medical Help

Individuals experiencing frequent urination are often confused whether it's a symptom of diabetes or a prostate-related condition. Dr. Anoop Kumar, Head of Urology at Safdarjung Hospital, clarifies that both elevated blood sugar and an enlarged prostate can lead to this issue. He emphasizes that one cannot directly conclude cancer based solely on symptoms, and specific diagnostic tests are crucial for accurate identification.

Frequent Urination: Is it Diabetes or Prostate Cancer? Expert Doctor Reveals How to Identify the Cause and When to Seek Medical Help

Many individuals grappling with the issue of frequent urination are often caught in a dilemma, wondering if it indicates diabetes or a serious prostate condition. Some even jump to the conclusion of prostate cancer, leading to unnecessary anxiety. But what truly lies behind these symptoms? When does this problem become dangerous, and when can it be considered benign? To uncover the answers to these crucial questions, 'The Freelance' has engaged in an exclusive conversation with an expert.

Diabetes or Prostate: Understanding Differences and Similarities in Symptoms

Professor (Dr.) Anoop Kumar, Head of the Department of Urology at Safdarjung Hospital and VMMC, speaking at the 'Society of Robotic Surgery (SRS) India 2026' International Conference in Delhi, explained that in diabetes, when blood sugar levels rise, the body attempts to expel excess glucose through urine. This process disrupts the body's fluid balance, resulting in frequent and increased urination, medically known as polydipsia (excessive thirst) and polyuria (excessive urination).

Conversely, in men, the prostate gland naturally tends to enlarge with age, a condition referred to as Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH). When the prostate grows, it can exert pressure on the urethra (the tube that carries urine out of the body). This pressure can lead to various urinary symptoms such as a weak urine stream, difficulty initiating urination, frequent urination (especially waking up multiple times at night), and a sensation that the bladder hasn't fully emptied after urination.

Dr. Kumar clarified that while these symptoms can be highly bothersome, they do not directly imply prostate cancer. Symptoms of prostate cancer and benign prostate enlargement (BPH) can often appear similar. Therefore, it is incorrect to conclude that an individual has prostate cancer based solely on symptoms; medical examination is paramount.

When to Be Alert and What are the Necessary Tests?

According to Dr. Anoop Kumar, for a correct diagnosis, doctors typically take a comprehensive medical history, evaluate symptoms, and consider lifestyle habits. Additionally, several essential tests are conducted. These may include a Prostate-Specific Antigen (PSA) blood test, a general urine test, and a blood sugar test. The PSA test helps in detecting prostate-related issues, though an elevated PSA level alone is not definitive proof of cancer. If necessary, doctors might recommend a Digital Rectal Examination (DRE) of the prostate, an ultrasound, or other imaging tests to pinpoint the root cause of the problem.

The doctor also highlighted that in recent years, the burden of non-communicable diseases like diabetes, high blood pressure, and kidney-related ailments has significantly increased in India compared to infectious diseases. Alarmingly, cancer cases are also being reported at younger ages. This trend can be attributed to several risk factors, including changing lifestyles, alcohol consumption, smoking, and rising pollution. He believes that the proliferation of cancer-promoting genes may also be contributing to early-onset cancers.

Dr. Anoop Kumar advises that instead of panicking when experiencing such symptoms, the most crucial step is to consult an experienced urologist promptly. He assures that modern and effective treatment options are available in India for these conditions. Early and accurate diagnosis of the disease enables appropriate treatment, which can help patients lead a better and normal life.
