Video: Law Student Works as Delivery Boy to Manage Expenses, Sparks Debate on Gig Work

Balancing higher education with financial independence is one of the biggest challenges for young adults. Many students studying in major cities often take up odd jobs to manage their daily expenses and ease their financial burdens. A similar inspiring and relatable story of an LLB student has now gone viral on social media, sparking nationwide conversations about modern gig work.

Kaval Desai, a law student, took to the microblogging platform X to share his unique journey of working as a part-time delivery partner with Blinkit. To manage his academic expenses independently, Kaval decided to utilize his free time by taking up deliveries, documenting his first-day experience in detail to give people a peek into a student's daily hustle.

Decoding the First Day: Earnings and Efforts

Kaval revealed that he successfully completed 19 deliveries in roughly six and a half hours. Throughout the shift, he covered around 51 kilometers exclusively for order drops, excluding return distances. At the end of the shift, his total earnings stood at ₹608, which included ₹508 as delivery payments along with incentives, and a ₹100 bonus for achieving his daily target.

Highlighting his advantage, Kaval mentioned that owning an electric scooter charged at home kept his fuel costs down to absolute zero. However, he had to wrap up his gig early due to a low battery and pressing academic commitments. He praised the delivery platform for making part-time work smooth and efficient for students looking to earn on the side.

Online Debate on Gig Economy Realities

Kaval's post quickly went viral, prompting intense discussions across the internet regarding the state of gig workers in India. While many social media users lauded his dedication and proactive attitude, others discussed the harsh realities and physical toll of delivery jobs. One user pointed out that gig work was originally designed for part-time earnings, but socio-economic pressures often push individuals into treating it full-time.

Other users chimed in with their own experiences working for food and grocery delivery platforms, discussing the cost-benefit analysis of spending hours riding bikes versus opting for alternative gigs like catering. Ultimately, the student's honest confession shed light on the relentless hustle of modern youth striving to build a better future.
