Social media rumors can often spark widespread panic, and a recent incident in Uttar Pradesh's Basti district is a prime example. A video showing a leopard-like animal roaming near a pond went viral, causing immense fear among local residents and livestock owners. People hesitated to step out of their homes, fearing for the safety of their children and domestic animals.
The Viral Video and Rising Panic
The incident was reported from the border areas of Dengarha and Sauraha gram panchayats under the Gaur police station limits. A local laborer named Rajesh, originally from Bihar who has been working in the village for a decade, spotted the creature near a pond during the evening hours. He managed to record its movement on his camera. As soon as the video circulated on social media platforms, fear gripped the surrounding villages.
Livestock owners grew particularly anxious about their goats and sheep. Panchayat administrator Ejaz Ahmed noted that the video created an atmosphere of deep concern among the villagers, who immediately urged forest officials to intervene and identify the animal to prevent any untoward incidents.
Forest Department Closes the Case: It's a Fishing Cat
Taking prompt cognizance of the matter, Ramnagar Range Forest Officer Sonal Verma investigated the viral footage. After careful examination of the animal's physical traits and movement patterns, the forest department officially confirmed that the animal in question is not a leopard, but a 'fishing cat'.
