The auspicious occasion of Karma Puja turned into a nightmare for several families across Bihar as multiple tragic drowning incidents were reported from different districts. What was supposed to be a day of vibrant celebrations, rituals, and community joy quickly transformed into an atmosphere of grief and despair. Rivers and water bodies, usually bustling with devotional fervor, became sites of devastating accidents in the districts of Patna and Nalanda.
Local authorities and emergency response teams struggled to cope with the series of distress calls as families realized the magnitude of the tragedies. Despite rescue efforts by locals and divers, several precious lives could not be saved. These recurring incidents during major cultural festivals highlight the pressing need for stringent safety measures and heightened public awareness around hazardous water bodies in rural and semi-urban areas.
Multiple Drowning Incidents Reported Across Patna Rural Areas
In the rural outskirts of Patna, the festive spirit was shattered by a series of drowning mishaps at various river ghats. Incidents were reported from Bakhtiyarpur, Barh, Athmalgola, and Maner, leaving local communities in deep shock. In Bakhtiyarpur, three minor children slipped into deep waters while bathing, resulting in immediate fatalities that left their parents inconsolable. Similar tragic news emerged from Barh, where multiple lives were lost under distressing circumstances.
The situation was equally grim near the banks of the Ganga in Maner and Athmalgola, where a woman and two young girls lost their lives while performing ritual immersions. In Athmalgola, a brother and sister were trapped in the strong currents of the river. Although rescue operations were swiftly initiated, the tragedy deeply impacted the local community. Joyous preparations in many households were abruptly replaced by weeping relatives and mourning neighbors.
Heartbreaking Incident in Nalanda District Shatters a Family
Neighboring Nalanda district also witnessed deeply poignant incidents on the day of Karma Puja, resulting in the untimely deaths of a woman, a young girl, and a youth. In the Rahui police station jurisdiction, 42-year-old Radha Devi and seven-year-old Nandani went to take a ritual bath in the Goithwa river between Basanpur and Kuardih villages. Both drifted into deep waters and unfortunately drowned before help could reach them in time.
In another heartbreaking event in the Nagarnausa block, 19-year-old Dilkhush Kumar lost his life while retrieving clay from a pond for ritual idols. Dilkhush's sister had kept a fast and observed Karma Puja prayers for the long life and well-being of her brother. Ironically, the very brother she prayed for slipped and drowned in deep water during preparations for the ritual. The village plunged into profound sorrow following this cruel twist of fate.
Urgent Call for Enhanced Safety Measures at Water Bodies
These recurring tragedies during major festivals starkly expose the inadequacy of safety arrangements near rural water bodies. The absence of barricades, warning signs, and deployed lifeguards or rescue divers often proves fatal for unsuspecting citizens and children. Local administrations face mounting criticism for failing to secure vulnerable ghats and ponds during high-participation religious events.
