Political Fractures Visible in Bihar MLC Elections
The political landscape in Bihar is witnessing a fresh round of friction within the opposition Mahagathbandhan, particularly between Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) and the Congress party. With the upcoming biennial elections to the Bihar Legislative Council fast approaching, the lack of consensus on seat-sharing has once again brought 'friendly fights' to the forefront, raising serious questions about opposition unity in the state.
Political analysts note that the widening communication gap between the two major allies could weaken their collective political narrative against the ruling NDA. Despite being part of a larger coalition meant to pose a united challenge, independent decisions by party leaderships have continuously disrupted smooth electoral coordination on the ground.
Unilateral Declarations by RJD Spark Resentment
The current standoff originated when the RJD leadership announced its candidates for several legislative council seats without prior formal consultations with its coalition partners. By releasing the names of its nominees for multiple seats early on, RJD left little room for collective dialogue, prompting immediate discontent within the Congress camp.
Congress leaders argued that coalition dharma necessitates mutual discussions before finalizing electoral contests. However, the perceived sidelining forced the Congress high command to independently evaluate its options and greenlight its own candidates, thereby escalating tensions between the two parties.
Congress Releases List of Five Candidates
Following approval from Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, the AICC officially released the list of party candidates for the graduate and teacher constituencies of the Bihar Legislative Council. The party has declared candidates across five key seats, ensuring direct contests with RJD nominees in at least four of them.
This development underscores the fragility of current political alignments in the state, where grassroots cadres often find themselves caught in a crossfire between nominal allies who end up competing directly against each other.
Key Constituencies Facing Direct Contests
According to the announced list, the Patna Teachers' constituency will witness a contest where Congress nominee Sanjay Yadav faces RJD's Sanjeev Kumar Singh. Similarly, for the Patna Graduates' seat, Congress has fielded Asadullah Khan against RJD's Dilip Kumar.
In the Kosi Graduates' constituency, Manoj Kumar Jayसवाल represents Congress against RJD candidate Nitesh Kumar. Meanwhile, the Darbhanga Graduates' seat will also see a two-way battle between Congress candidate Rajnikant Pathak and RJD's Anil Kumar Jha.
Madan Mohan Jha Renominated from Darbhanga Teachers' Seat
Amidst the broader friction, Congress has decided to renominate veteran leader and former state party president Madan Mohan Jha from the Darbhanga Teachers' constituency. Notably, RJD has opted not to field a candidate on this specific seat, providing a relatively clear path for the Congress leader.
Jha will face competition from JD(U)'s Ghanshyam Rai as well as Jan Suraaj Party's S.P. Rai, making this particular electoral battle a multi-cornered contest with significant political attention.
Persistent Seat-Sharing Issues Since Assembly Polls
This is not an isolated incident of seat-sharing friction between the two opposition allies. During the previous assembly elections as well, protracted negotiations often failed to yield comprehensive agreements, resulting in multiple friendly contests across various constituencies.
Observers believe that recurring coordination issues highlight deeper structural challenges within the opposition coalition. Unless addressed proactively by top leaders, such internal conflicts risk undermining their electoral prospects in future political battles across the state.
