BJP Announces New Rajya Sabha Candidates
The political corridors are abuzz with activity as the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) announced its candidates for the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections and by-elections. According to the central party leadership, candidates have been finalized for the crucial West Bengal by-election and the biennial election in Uttarakhand. Political analysts believe these elections are part of a strategic move to strengthen numbers in the upper house of Parliament.
As per the official announcement, Rukmini Mallik, popularly known as Koya Mallik, has been fielded for the lone Rajya Sabha seat by-election in West Bengal. Meanwhile, seasoned political figure Dinesh Arya has been declared the official candidate for the seat in Uttarakhand. The announcement of these names has triggered intense political discussions across both states.
West Bengal Political Shifts and Koya Mallik's Candidature
West Bengal's political landscape has witnessed significant turbulence recently. A by-election became necessary after Koya Mallik abruptly resigned from the upper house on July 16. Although her original tenure was scheduled until April 2032, her departure left a vacancy. Her exit was viewed as a major political earthquake, given her previous affiliation with Mamata Banerjee's Trinamool Congress (TMC).
Reports suggest that internal dissent within the TMC grew following the state assembly elections, leading several prominent leaders and lawmakers to switch sides and join the BJP. Following leaders like Sukhendu Shekhar Roy, Sushmita Dev, and Prakash Chik Barik, Koya Mallik had also resigned and embraced the saffron fold. By nominating her for the by-election, the BJP is seeking to exert psychological pressure on the ruling state dispensation.
Dinesh Arya Gets the Nod in Uttarakhand
In Uttarakhand, the electoral arithmetic heavily favors the BJP. With sitting Rajya Sabha member Naresh Bansal's tenure nearing completion later this year, a biennial election was necessitated. Given the party's commanding majority in the Uttarakhand legislative assembly, retaining this seat is widely considered a certainty for the ruling party.
The party leadership has placed its trust in Dinesh Arya for the Uttarakhand seat. Having worked diligently at the organizational level, his nomination has injected fresh enthusiasm among local party cadres. Experts note that due to a weak opposition presence in the state assembly, the electoral contest here is expected to be smooth for the ruling party.
Complete Schedule and Polling Process
The Election Commission has released the official timeline for elections across 12 Rajya Sabha seats spanning Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and West Bengal. This includes 10 seats in Uttar Pradesh and one in Uttarakhand where incumbent members are completing their terms, alongside the West Bengal by-election. Voting for all these seats is scheduled to take place on October 16.
Polling will commence in the morning and conclude by evening as per strict election guidelines. Counting of votes will be conducted immediately after the conclusion of polling on the same day, with results announced shortly thereafter. The commission aims to complete the entire electoral process within the stipulated timeframe to ensure uninterrupted representation in Parliament.
