Security Personnel Attacked During Political Protest in New Delhi
Tensions escalated significantly at New Delhi's historic Jantar Mantar as protests organized by student and political wings turned violent. Amid ongoing demonstrations against the Chief Election Commissioner and SIR regulations, a security personnel on official duty was targeted and assaulted with a sharp weapon. The incident has sent shockwaves through security agencies responsible for maintaining law and order in the national capital.
According to eyewitness accounts and police reports, hundreds of activists belonging to the Congress student wing, NSUI, gathered at the protest site to voice their opposition. As demonstrators attempted to breach barricades and push past security cordons, a scuffle broke out. Taking advantage of the chaos, one of the protestors allegedly attacked a Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) jawan with a sharp object.
Injured CISF Personnel Hospitalized, Attacker Detained
The injured security personnel has been identified as Vikram Kumar, who was deployed at the venue to manage the crowd. Officials confirmed that the jawan sustained a minor injury on his right elbow during the sudden assault. Prompt intervention by fellow security personnel ensured that the situation did not spiral further out of control, and the alleged attacker was immediately apprehended at the scene.
The injured jawan was swiftly transported to Ram Manohar Lohia (RML) Hospital, where he underwent medical examinations and received necessary treatment. Following minor medical attention, he was discharged. Meanwhile, Delhi Police have registered a formal First Information Report (FIR) and initiated rigorous legal proceedings against the accused.
Supreme Court Intervention and Escalating Political Tensions
The protests stem from weeks of sustained opposition agitation led by various left and centrist parties demanding accountability and the resignation of top election officials. The controversy has also reached the Supreme Court of India, which recently issued notices to the Election Commission and the central government following petitions filed regarding the matter.
Political reactions have been sharp, with prominent leaders criticizing the administration and raising questions about institutional integrity. As security forces grapple with repeated incidents of violence and stone-pelting during recent demonstrations, authorities have reinforced security measures across central Delhi to prevent further escalation.
