A major political controversy has unfolded in the national capital following the arrest of 'Cockroach Janta Party' (CJP) leaders during a protest near Jantar Mantar. CJP leaders Sourav Das, Ashutosh Ranka, and Ajinkya Shinde were detained by Delhi Police and presented before the SEM court, following which Sourav Das and Ashutosh Ranka were sent to Tihar Jail under a five-day judicial custody.
The incident occurred when CJP members entered the high-security Jantar Mantar zone demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar while waving the national flag. Delhi Police defended the action, stating that the demonstrators violated Section 163 of the BNSS and flouted previously signed peace bonds. Police also alleged that the protesters obstructed officers from performing their official duties.
The arrests drew sharp reactions from opposition leaders. Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, took to social media to denounce the move, stating that waving the Tricolour during a peaceful protest is not a crime. He called the jailing of youth an act of cowardice and asserted that Jantar Mantar belongs to the citizens of India and will be reclaimed.
TMC MP Abhishek Banerjee and local CJP leaders, including founder Abhijeet Dipke and legal head Ratna Singh, also criticized the authorities. They accused the administration of suppressing democratic rights and trying to crush peaceful civilian movements against electoral malpractices.
