Dupahiya Season 2 Dominates OTT Streaming Charts
The rural comedy-drama genre continues to capture the imagination of Indian digital audiences, with Amazon Prime Video's latest offering 'Dupahiya 2' racing straight to the number one trending spot upon its release. Following the massive success of its maiden season, the second installment brings back the quirky charm of the fictional Bihari village Dhadakpur, enriched with heightened dramatic twists, romance, and local humor.
The eight-episode series features an ensemble cast delivering stellar performances. Ahead of the premiere, key cast members including Sparsh Shrivastava and veteran actress Renuka Shahane opened up about the intensive preparations, unique physical transformations, and behind-the-scenes challenges involved in bringing their respective characters to life.
The Journey of Bhogol Jha and Social Media Ambitions
Actor Sparsh Shrivastava essays the character of Bhogol Jha, an ambitious young man desperate for acting stardom who creates viral reels dressed as a woman to boost his social media following. His uncanny ability to seamlessly transition into a female avatar has left viewers stunned, with many finding it hard to recognize him on screen.
Reflecting on the challenges of portraying a female character, Sparsh revealed that the groundwork for this role was unknowingly laid during his childhood. He credited his early artistic upbringing for giving him the grace and physical mannerisms required to pull off the demanding sequences with finesse.
Childhood Kathak Training and Dancing in Frocks
Elaborating on his artistic background, Sparsh disclosed that his mother introduced him to classical dance at a very tender age. He underwent formal training in Kathak for nearly three years, which instilled in him the precise hand gestures and physical poise that proved immensely helpful for his current role.
Recalling his childhood memories, Sparsh shared, "I feel those elements were already embedded inside me. When I was a little boy, my mother taught me Kathak, and I trained for three years. That inherent grace and hand expression stayed with me. During my childhood days, I even used to dance wearing frocks on local stages in Agra. Though I had a long hiatus from that art form, getting back into character for Dupahiya brought those instincts right back."
The Physical Toll of Traditional Female Attire
Despite his dance background, donning heavy traditional female costumes presented a formidable physical challenge during production. Sparsh admitted that managing tight blouses, ghagras, and heavy ethnic styling required immense patience and endurance.
"While rehearsals helped me get the body language right, the toughest part was dealing with the costumes. Those skirts, cholis, and tightly fitted blouses are extremely restrictive. Surviving in those fitted clothes while performing is a massive task, and it definitely gives you a newfound appreciation for what women wear." — Sparsh Shrivastava, Actor
Renuka Shahane's Linguistic Transformation as Pushplata Yadav
Adding gravitas to the series is veteran actress Renuka Shahane, who portrays the formidable village sarpanch Pushplata Yadav. Hailing from Maharashtra, mastering the rustic Bihari dialect proved to be a challenging milestone for the acclaimed actress.
Sharing her preparation process, Renuka noted, "We had a dedicated language expert, Ravi ji, who patiently trained me. Since I was the least familiar with this specific dialect, I required extensive coaching. It took a considerable amount of time to get comfortable with the cadence, to the point where I now occasionally catch myself speaking normal Hindi with that exact rural inflection."
A Winning Blend of Comedy and Social Commentary
Directed by Sonam Nair, 'Dupahiya 2' weaves contemporary issues such as paper leaks, local superstition, and petty village politics into a tightly scripted narrative. The seamless blend of rustic innocence and sharp satire has resonated deeply with viewers, cementing its status as a must-watch streaming title this season.
