Amid Political Row Over SIR, Election Commission Announces Special Summary Revision in 17 States

Amidst a heated political slugfest over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has announced the rollout of the Special Summary Revision (SSR) across 17 states and union territories. The move comes ahead of upcoming assembly elections in several states, aiming to streamline voter databases and include first-time young voters.

States Covered and Key Timelines

According to the ECI directive, the SSR process will be conducted in states including Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Manipur, Goa, Bihar, Tamil Nadu, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Kerala, Assam, Puducherry, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, and Lakshadweep. January 1, 2027, has been set as the qualifying date for this revision.

As per the schedule, the draft electoral roll will be published on November 12. Claims and objections for additions, deletions, or corrections can be filed up to December 11. Following the disposal of all claims, the final electoral roll will be published on January 4, 2027.

Focus on Young and First-Time Voters

The primary objective of the SSR is to enroll eligible voters, particularly youth and first-time citizens, rectify discrepancies in entries, and enhance the overall accuracy of the voter list. Notably, the commission will also accept advance applications from eligible citizens for the subsequent three quarters of 2027 (April, July, and October), enabling youngsters turning 18 in 2027 to apply in advance.
