Massive Student Protests Erupt Across France Over School Infrastructure
A wave of widespread protests has swept across France as thousands of high school students and teachers take to the streets to express their deep frustration over deteriorating educational conditions. What began as localized demonstrations in economically disadvantaged areas around Paris has quickly escalated into a national movement, spreading rapidly to major cities including Marseille, Strasbourg, Tours, and Lille.
Protesting students are demanding immediate attention to severely overcrowded classrooms, a critical shortage of teachers, and crumbling school facilities. Eighteen-year-old Paravai Kohelanathan, participating in a protest outside her high school in Bobigny, highlighted the dismal reality inside classrooms, pointing out that students frequently lack basic seating, while essential digital tools like computers remain non-functional.
Budget Cuts and Inflation Add Fuel to the Fire
The unrest was further intensified following the government's announcement of the 2027 national budget, which proposed a meager 1.7 percent increase in education spending—an increment well below the prevailing inflation rate. Although total educational expenditure reached 65.53 billion euros, students and teachers argue that these funds fall drastically short of addressing real-world needs.
Educational staff have also voiced their strong disapproval, with teacher Adrian Prud-homme warning of escalating strikes. The planned strikes by teachers in solidarity with student demands threaten to paralyze academic schedules nationwide, compounding the pressure on the French government.
Rising Violence and Government Response
As the protests continue to gain momentum, confrontations between demonstrators and law enforcement have turned increasingly volatile. Authorities report numerous incidents of arson and property damage, leading to thousands of arrests among minors and young adults. While interior ministry officials have condemned the violence and appealed for calm, the resolve among students and teachers remains steadfast as they demand structural reforms in France's public education system.
