Major Train Accident Averted in West Midnapore
Panic gripped the busy Kharagpur-Baleswar railway section on Sunday evening when a freight train met with an unexpected accident. Carrying coal from Odisha towards Kharagpur, the last four bogies of the goods train suddenly derailed from the tracks. The incident occurred so abruptly that the train crew had no time to apply emergency brakes. Fortunately, no casualties were reported, averting what could have been a massive disaster.
According to available details, the incident took place under the jurisdiction of the Narayangarh police station area in West Midnapore district. The mishap occurred near railway gate number 11 in the Rampura area between Narayangarh and Benapur railway stations. The loud screech of slipping wheels alarmed local villagers, who rushed to the site. Following the derailment, two of the bogies rolled off quite far from the main track towards adjacent fields.
Down Line Train Operations Completely Disrupted
The unexpected accident triggered immediate panic among railway authorities. Since the derailed bogies blocked the down main line, train movement on this route had to be suspended instantly. Senior engineers and technical teams from the Kharagpur division rushed to the spot with emergency equipment within hours. Security measures were ramped up, and incoming passenger trains were regulated at nearby stations to ensure absolute safety.
Railway officials assessing the situation noted that the accident not only damaged the tracks but also severely affected the overhead electrical (OHE) wires. With the wires snapping, operating electric trains on that route became impossible. Prioritizing passenger safety, the railways launched a war-level relief operation, deploying modern cranes and technical machinery immediately.
Round-the-Clock Track Restoration and Repair Work
Despite nightfall, the engineering wing of the railways continued restoration work without interruption. Dozens of technical staff and labourers were deployed to fix the tracks. Under the supervision of senior officials, operations began to clear the derailed wagons lying far from the track, followed by welding and realigning the damaged rails to resume normal traffic as quickly as possible.
A senior railway official stated that as an alternative arrangement, train operations on the up line were restored after necessary safety checks. However, due to the extensive damage on the down line, repair work continued through the night. Train movement on the affected line was planned to resume only after thorough safety audits.
Passenger Safety and Prompt Railway Response
Such rail incidents continue to raise serious questions regarding railway safety and maintenance. However, the swift response and proactive coordination by railway administration prevented any loss of human life. Authorities have emphasized that periodic track maintenance and rigorous load monitoring will be further strengthened to prevent such incidents in the future, as internal committees begin probing the root cause of the derailment.
