The lack of basic facilities in government schools across the country has long been a significant challenge. Often, due to a shortage of resources and proper maintenance, the condition of schools deteriorates to the extent that both teaching and learning become extremely difficult. Taking a major step to transform this ground reality, a district administration has rewritten the chapter of sanitation in temples of education, simultaneously opening new avenues of livelihood in rural areas.
Moving away from traditional setups, the administration decided to find a permanent solution to this issue. Officials believed that if classrooms were dusty and toilets filthy, students could hardly concentrate on their studies. Ground Reality Uncovered Through Official Surveys
To assess the actual condition of the educational institutions, the administration launched a special three-day campaign. Hundreds of official teams were deployed on the ground, tasked with inspecting various schools. These teams examined the schools across seventeen different parameters and gathered critical data.
The survey brought several issues to light. While some buildings were found in a dilapidated state, others faced a shortage of furniture. However, the most severe and common problem everywhere was the pathetic sanitation condition. In most schools, sanitation workers did not show up regularly, leaving toilets locked or rendered completely unusable.
Unique Solution Found at the Gram Panchayat Level
To tackle this critical problem, the district administration decided to find a solution directly at the Gram Panchayat level. Through the Chief Development Officer, reviews of funds and budgets across all village councils were conducted. The verification confirmed that panchayats had sufficient funds available for development works, which could be utilized for this purpose.
Consequently, directives were issued to all village councils to make special arrangements for school sanitation. Under this provision, a dedicated sanitation worker was appointed for each school at a monthly honorarium of five thousand rupees. These workers were assigned to ensure that the school premises, toilets, classrooms, and ceiling fans remained thoroughly clean.

Around seven hundred individuals from the villages themselves secured work under this arrangement. These people were assigned a few hours of daily responsibility in schools located within their villages or nearby areas, earning a fixed honorarium in return.
Headmasters of the schools noted that the availability of regular sanitation workers keeps the premises consistently tidy. Cleanliness is now visible everywhere, from kitchens to classrooms. Furthermore, providing employment to local residents has offered modest improvements to their economic well-being.
Strict Monitoring Through WhatsApp Groups
Monitoring is crucial for the successful implementation of any government scheme. This initiative ensured that there was no room for negligence. The responsibility for regular monitoring of the sanitation work was entrusted to the headmaster of each respective school.
Headmasters share daily reports and photographs of the cleaned premises on an official WhatsApp group of the Gram Panchayat. This digital monitoring system keeps senior officials and panchayat representatives updated on whether work is being executed properly, ensuring transparency and accountability at every level.
Visible Impact: Rising Student Attendance
The biggest impact of this cleanliness revolution has been witnessed among students and teachers. Toilets that students previously avoided due to filth are now regularly utilized. Providing a clean and healthy environment has boosted children's enthusiasm to attend school regularly.
