A Major Push for Renewable Energy Infrastructure
In a significant move to strengthen the country's power sector and promote environmental sustainability, the Union Cabinet has officially approved the third phase of the Green Energy Corridor (GEC-III) scheme. Presided over by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, this ambitious initiative is designed to upgrade transmission networks and integrate large-scale renewable energy into the national grid seamlessly.
As India moves aggressively toward its long-term climate and clean energy goals, upgrading transmission systems has become a top priority. The newly approved phase will inject massive financial resources into creating a robust infrastructure capable of handling the massive surge in solar and wind power generation anticipated over the coming decade.
Breaking Down the Rs 1.86 Lakh Crore Outlay
The scale of this nationwide project is massive, backed by a total financial allocation of Rs 1,86,405 करोड़ (Rs 1,86,405 crore). This capital will be utilized systematically to build intra-state transmission systems and advanced energy storage facilities across various states and union territories.
According to official disclosures, out of the total outlay, Rs 1,36,378 crore has been earmarked specifically for developing the intra-state transmission network. Additionally, Rs 50,000 crore has been designated for setting up a 50 gigawatt-hour Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) to tackle intermittency issues associated with solar and wind power.
Substantial Central Financial Support
To ease the fiscal burden on state governments, the central government has committed to providing direct financial assistance of Rs 54,082 crore for the project. This targeted funding will help keep transmission charges under check, ensuring that the end consumers do not face inflated electricity tariffs.
Experts note that controlling transmission costs is vital for maintaining affordable power for households and industries alike. This strategic intervention bridges regional disparities and fosters uniform green energy adoption throughout the country.
Ensuring Stable Power Supply with Battery Storage
One of the primary challenges in the renewable energy sector is managing power supply fluctuations when weather conditions change. The integration of the 50 gigawatt-hour battery storage system under GEC-III directly addresses this vulnerability, ensuring that peak electricity demand periods are managed without resorting to power cuts.
By effectively routing up to 135 gigawatts of renewable energy from generation plants to consumption centers, the grid will achieve unprecedented stability and reliability.
Employment Generation and 2032-33 Target
The entire project is slated for completion by the financial year 2032-33. Beyond environmental benefits, this massive infrastructure push is expected to generate extensive employment opportunities across manufacturing, engineering, construction, and power management sectors.
