Political Tensions Rise Over IIT Bombay Student Suicide
The tragic death of BTech student Sahil Wakode at the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay has triggered widespread outrage and political engagement. Senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi reached out to the grieving parents, Ravindra and Sonali Wakode, via a video call to offer his condolences and assure them of all possible support during this difficult time.
The incident has sent shockwaves through the academic community, putting severe pressure on the institute administration regarding student welfare and campus safety protocols. Students staged protests outside the campus gates for three consecutive days, demanding accountability and systemic reforms.
Final Phone Call and Academic Stress
According to investigative leads, Sahil spoke to a close friend just hours before taking the extreme step. During the conversation, the 22-year-old student expressed extreme distress over a poorly performed thermodynamics examination, remarking that he had made a grave mistake. Shortly after, he stopped responding to communications.
While the family has alleged caste-based discrimination and harassment by specific faculty members, initial phone records did not explicitly mention any caste-related remarks during that final interaction. Crime branch officials are thoroughly examining all digital and physical evidence to piece together the sequence of events leading up to the tragedy.
CCTV Footage and Institutional Stance
Surveillance footage from the examination hall showed faculty members interacting with Sahil after noticing anomalies, following which he was asked to submit his phone and answer sheet and leave the hall. Although the institute initially issued a statement alleging use of unauthorized digital tools during the mid-semester exam, it later withdrew the remark, admitting that pre-judgment before a formal inquiry was premature.
A high-level 10-member committee, chaired by IIT Palakkad Board of Governors Chairman Ramesh Venkateswaran, has been instituted to probe the exact circumstances surrounding the incident and submit a comprehensive report within a week.

Following intense negotiations between the administration and protesting student bodies, the institute agreed to major charter demands, including enhanced mental health support systems and institutional transparency. As an immediate safety measure following the tragedy, IIT Bombay has announced the removal of all ceiling fans from hostel rooms, replacing them with secure wall-mounted alternatives.
