Air Travelers Face Higher Costs Ahead of Festive Season
For those planning to travel home or take vacations during major festivals like Diwali and Chhath, the country's largest airline IndiGo has made air travel more expensive. The airline has announced a significant hike in fuel surcharges for both domestic and international flights, directly impacting the common traveler's budget.
Passengers will now have to shell out more money while booking tickets. According to the new guidelines, domestic flights will attract an additional fuel charge of up to Rs 1300 based on the distance traveled. Meanwhile, international travelers may have to pay up to Rs 10,000 extra as fuel surcharge, significantly increasing the cost of long-haul journeys.
This move by IndiGo marks the third time the airline has increased fuel surcharges within the last six months, following previous revisions earlier in the year. The continuous rise in airfares is making air travel increasingly expensive for common citizens.
Why Did Fares Increase? Understanding the Jet Fuel Math
The primary reason behind this sudden fare hike is the massive surge in aviation turbine fuel (ATF) prices. With ATF rates witnessing a double-digit percentage increase, airline operating costs have skyrocketed.
According to experts, jet fuel accounts for roughly 30 to 40 percent of an airline's total operating expenses. When fuel prices spike, operating flights at older fares becomes economically unviable, forcing companies to pass on the burden to passengers.
Distance-Based Fuel Surcharge for Domestic Flights
IndiGo has clarified that the new fuel surcharge on domestic routes will vary depending on the distance of the journey. Shorter routes will see modest increases, while longer distances will incur higher charges, reaching up to Rs 1300 for flights exceeding 2,000 kilometers.
Impact on International Travelers and Festive Bookings
International flyers are bearing the brunt of a massive Rs 10,000 fuel surcharge hike. With global crude oil price fluctuations driving up aviation fuel costs worldwide, international routes are feeling the heaviest impact. Experts advise travelers to plan and book their festive trips well in advance to manage travel expenses effectively amidst these rising costs.
