A Bold Message from the Munich Global Stage
Amid shifting international geopolitical equations, India has once again strongly reaffirmed its independent foreign policy and enduring historical alliances. Speaking at the prestigious Munich Security Conference and Leaders Meeting in Germany, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar delivered a significant and unambiguous statement regarding the deep-rooted ties between Moscow and New Delhi.
The External Affairs Minister reminded Western nations that diplomatic relationships and strategic partnerships are not built overnight. They are anchored in decades of shared history, mutual trust, and unwavering support during times of crisis. India has consistently demonstrated that it values its time-tested friends.
When Much of the World Supported the Military Regime Next Door
Recalling historical realities, Jaishankar pointed out that during the Cold War era, the priorities and inclinations of a major part of the international community were contrary to India's security interests. When undemocratic and military-backed regimes in the neighborhood received external backing, India faced serious threats to its territorial integrity. During such critical junctures, the Soviet Union (now Russia) stood firmly by India's side.
Political analysts view this statement as a fitting response to persistent Western pressure regarding India's continuous purchase of discounted crude oil from Russia and its refusal to sever traditional defense ties with Moscow.
"Russia stood by India when much of the world backed the military regime next door and when our regional integrity was under severe threat. Countries do not forget good or bad history." — S Jaishankar, External Affairs Minister of India
Differentiating Perspectives on Moscow
Addressing Western double standards, Jaishankar articulated a clear perspective on diplomatic autonomy. He noted that Europe views Russia through the lens of its own contemporary security concerns, while New Delhi assesses its partnership with Moscow based on decades of positive historical experiences.
Over the past seven decades, from United Nations Security Council vetoes on Kashmir to critical geopolitical standoffs, Moscow has consistently respected and protected India's core national interests. This foundational partnership has steadily evolved to encompass energy trade, nuclear cooperation, and advanced defense manufacturing.
The Future of India's Global Rise and Strategic Autonomy
Concluding his address, Jaishankar highlighted India's robust demographic profile, rapid economic growth, and expanding global footprint, projecting that the country will ascend significantly in global power rankings over the next decade. Throughout this journey, the reliable partnership between New Delhi and Moscow will remain a vital pillar of stability and mutual benefit.
