The Ground Reality of Employment Fairs

Efforts are continuously made across the country to provide employment opportunities to the youth through various platforms. Large claims are often made regarding government and private employment fairs, suggesting they successfully shape the futures of thousands. In Kanpur, a major industrial hub of Uttar Pradesh, officials of the Regional Employment Office had claimed that thousands of educated youth would be connected with jobs by the end of the year. However, when these claims were tested on the ground, the reality turned out to be quite different.

A large employment fair was organized at the National Inter College in the Kidwai Nagar area of the city. The primary objective was to connect local youth with jobs matching their qualifications through various participating companies. Planners and departmental officials had made extensive preparations for the event. Company representatives, local public representatives, and administrative machinery arrived on time, but the target audience—job-seeking youth—turned up in numbers far lower than anticipated.

Why Counter Remained Empty Despite 12 Thousand Calls

To ensure the success of this employment fair, preparations were not limited to paper advertisements. On the instructions of officials, the call center established at the Vikas Bhavan made phone calls to nearly 12,000 registered youth, inviting them to attend. Additionally, the Regional Employment Office utilized digital platforms and various other mediums to spread awareness so that maximum youngsters could benefit from the opportunity.

Despite all these efforts, when the fair commenced, the scenario was contrary to expectations. Long queues of job seekers were missing outside the interview rooms. Officials and company representatives waited for candidates, but only 657 students ultimately showed up to try their luck. This lukewarm response surprised even departmental officials, especially in a metropolitan city where unemployment remains a major issue.

Only 290 Youth Selected Out of 2600 Posts

The employment fair at Kidwai Nagar featured 2600 vacancies across various companies. Openings ranged from technical and administrative roles to marketing positions. Organizers had estimated a massive rush, anticipating that shortlisting candidates would pose a challenge for companies. However, with only 657 applicants turning up, the entire selection process was confined to a very limited scope.

After a day-long process, companies found only 290 youth suitable for various positions and handed them offer letters on the spot. Consequently, a very small fraction of the available jobs could be filled. Local MLA Mahesh Tripathi, South District President Shivram Singh, and other dignitaries were present as chief guests to encourage the selected youth, but the low turnout left organizers pondering.

Why Youth Kept Distance From the Job Fair

Following these developments, reviews regarding the causes revealed several aspects reflecting the mindset of the youth and the realities of the contemporary labor market. Ujjwal Singh, Assistant Director of the Employment Office in the Kanpur division, explained in a media interaction that practical reasons contributed to the low turnout. He also cited recent rainfall as a factor that disrupted travel, preventing many aspirants from arriving on time.

"Most of the companies participating in the fair offered jobs in cities like Ahmedabad, Haryana, Noida, and other metropolitan areas. Many youth chose not to opt for jobs requiring relocation to other states, leading them to skip the selection process or decline the offers." — Ujjwal Singh, Assistant Director, Employment Office Kanpur

Experts note that local youth generally prioritize employment within their hometown or nearby districts. The balance between salaries offered in distant states and the cost of living there often fails to attract young candidates. Moreover, sometimes the mismatch between the offered remuneration and qualifications discourages participation.

Future Strategies and College Campaigns

Following the moderate success of this employment fair, the labor and employment department has decided to revise its strategy. Officials stated that instead of organizing large single-venue fairs, they will now reach out directly to the youth. In the coming days, special employment campaigns will be conducted across various degree colleges and technical institutes in the city.

The department believes that visiting college campuses for student counseling and explaining company requirements in detail could yield better results. Furthermore, plans are underway to organize guidance sessions aimed at enhancing local employment opportunities and addressing hesitation related to relocating, ensuring that future events benefit a larger number of aspirants.
