The investigation into the mysterious arson incident near a Jewish religious site in Kochi has taken a dramatic turn, pointing towards a potential terror angle. Police have retrieved references regarding attacks on Jewish religious sites from the mobile phone of the arrested accused. Investigators are now analyzing Telegram chats to ascertain whether the accused was in contact with handlers and receiving specific instructions to target particular locations.
Arson Near Historic Synagogue Site
On the morning of October 12, an arson incident was reported at Blossom Nursery, situated right in front of the Kadavumbagom synagogue near Ernakulam Market. Following the incident, police arrested a 32-year-old local resident named Bin Paul. During subsequent searches at Paul's residence, authorities recovered a cache of banned and synthetic drugs, including heroin, fentanyl, oxycodone, alprazolam, and ketamine, further deepening the mystery behind his activities.
Decoding Telegram Chats and Handlers
Police suspicion grew stronger after discovering suspicious text references concerning Jewish monuments in the accused's electronic devices. According to police sources, Paul had allegedly been in touch with an unidentified handler over the encrypted messaging app Telegram for several months. Investigators are preparing to officially write to Telegram to retrieve deleted chat histories and identify the individuals directing him. A special investigation team (SIT), headed by senior officials, is currently examining all digital footprints.
Legal Proceedings and Mental Health Claims
During a magistrate court hearing regarding police custody, the defense counsel claimed that Paul was undergoing treatment for mental health issues. The court has permitted a medical evaluation. Meanwhile, a separate case has been registered by the Puthencruz police following the recovery of narcotics from his residence. Authorities stated that a comprehensive probe is underway to unravel the full conspiracy behind the arson, drug peddling, and suspected external handlers.
