The Indian electric passenger vehicle market is experiencing a massive transformation, with sales growing by 85 percent year-on-year in August 2026. Total sales reached 36,593 units across various brands. However, the biggest surprise came from Mahindra, which successfully challenged Tata Motors' long-held dominance in the segment. Mahindra's new three-row electric SUV, the XEV 9s, emerged as the highest-selling electric car with 4,508 units sold. In comparison, the Tata Punch EV recorded 4,430 units, highlighting the intensifying competition in the EV space. While Tata still commands the overall market due to its diverse portfolio, the growing demand for spacious 7-seater electric SUVs marks a significant shift in consumer preferences.
