Major Administrative Reshuffle: Mandeep Bhandari Takes Charge as CBSE Chief
In a major bureaucratic shake-up, the central government has restructured several key departments and reassigned senior IAS officers. As part of this comprehensive reshuffle, 2001-batch AGMUT cadre IAS officer Mandeep Bhandari has been appointed as the new Chairperson of the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE). The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has formally approved his assignment, according to an order released by the Department of Personnel and Training.
Prior to this crucial appointment, Bhandari was serving as the Principal Secretary to the Lieutenant Governor of Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir. His extensive administrative background is expected to bring administrative stability and policy improvements to the premier national educational board.
Previous Charge and Transition of Leadership
Before Bhandari's appointment, senior IAS officer Lokhande Prashant Sitaram held the additional charge of CBSE Chairperson. Sitaram was appointed as Additional Secretary in the Union Ministry of Home Affairs in July and was handed the additional responsibility of leading the board. With educational reforms and evaluation systems remaining in continuous focus, the appointment of a dedicated full-time chairperson was seen as an essential step by the government.
Key Reassignments Across Major Ministries
The latest bureaucratic overhaul extends well beyond the education sector, impacting critical ministries and autonomous bodies. Vipan Kumar, previously serving as the Chairman of the Airports Authority of India (AAI), has been moved to the Department of Rural Development as Additional Secretary. Similarly, Director General of Hydrocarbons Srikant Nagulapalli has been reassigned as Additional Secretary in the Department of Expenditure.
To fill the vacancy left by Nagulapalli, 2000-batch Karnataka cadre IAS officer V. Ponuraj has been appointed as the new Director General of Hydrocarbons. Other notable appointments include Sarita Chauhan Chand as Additional Secretary and Financial Advisor in the Ministry of Steel, and Anand Singh as Additional Secretary in the Department of Economic Affairs.
Focus on Efficiency and Good Governance
Additional secretaries have also been appointed across various other vital sectors, including P. Hemalatha in the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT), Piyush Singh in the Ministry of Power, Ankita Mishra Bundela in the Department of Higher Education, and Manisha Sensarma in the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship. Political analysts view this extensive reshuffle as a strategic effort by the central administration to streamline policy implementation and enhance administrative execution across government machinery.
