Bullet Train Breakthrough: 1405-Tonne Mega Steel Bridge Launched Over Highway in Maharashtra

In a monumental engineering milestone, the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail (MAHSR) project has successfully launched its first massive steel truss bridge in Maharashtra. Spanning 100 meters in length and weighing an astonishing 1,405 metric tonnes, the colossal structure was erected over National Highway 3 (Mumbai-Nashik Highway) at Dive-Anjur village near Bhiwandi in Thane district. The accomplishment represents not only high-precision structural engineering but also extraordinary nationwide logistical planning.

Fabricated in Trichy and Hauled 1,300 km Across States

The steel bridge components were manufactured at a specialized fabrication facility located in Tiruchirappalli (Trichy), Tamil Nadu—over 1,300 kilometers away from the construction site. Fabricated under stringent international quality protocols, each steel plate underwent ultrasonic testing to detect microscopic flaws. Certified master welders carried out precision drilling, cutting, and assembly under strict oversight.

Following workshop fabrication, the heavy components were loaded onto heavy-duty multi-axle trailers and transported across several states to the Thane site. Upon arrival, the components were assembled on temporary ground trestles rising approximately 17.5 meters high using 22 specialized skid arrangements. Over 54,076 high-strength Tor-Shear bolts were used to assemble the girder structure into a single monolithic frame measuring 14 meters in width and 14 meters in height.

"Steel truss spans are indispensable when spanning major highways and waterways without intermediate piers. This installation demonstrates the peak of modern automated launching capabilities." — Senior Project Official, MAHSR Corridor

Automated Launching Over Heavy Highway Traffic

Erecting a 1,405-tonne steel superstructure across one of India's busiest transit corridors demanded flawless precision. To minimize commuter inconvenience, the bridge launching was executed during scheduled night traffic blocks. Engineers deployed an automatic launching mechanism powered by two 150-tonne capacity hollow hydraulic jacks along with pre-tensioned Macalloy bars.

The bridge was slowly guided into its permanent seating atop concrete piers. To ensure resilience against environmental weathering and coastal humidity, the structure was coated with an advanced C5 protective paint system. High-performance elastomeric bearings were installed beneath the bridge to absorb vibrations when bullet trains dash across the span at speeds exceeding 320 km/h.

16 Out of 28 Steel Bridges Now Completed

The 508-kilometer high-speed rail corridor requires 28 steel bridges across critical crossings such as rivers, railway lines, and expressways where standard concrete spans are unfeasible. With this successful installation, 16 steel bridges have now been completed across the corridor.

Once operational, the bullet train will slash journey times between Mumbai and Ahmedabad from around seven hours to just over two hours, revolutionizing regional connectivity and fostering economic corridors across western India.
