Major Political Shift in Delhi as Priyanka Kakkar Switches to Congress
In a surprising development that has sent ripples through Delhi's political landscape, Aam Aadmi Party's prominent national chief spokesperson Priyanka Kakkar has officially severed ties with her former party and joined the Congress. Known for her articulate and aggressive defense of AAP on television news debates, Kakkar's departure is being viewed as a significant setback for Arvind Kejriwal's camp.
Kakkar formally took the primary membership of the Congress party in the presence of Delhi Congress President Devender Yadav, senior leader Rajiv Shukla, and Pawan Khera. Political analysts suggest that the exit of such a high-profile media face highlights growing internal friction and ideological disillusionment within the party ranks.
Questioning the Shift Away From Core Promises
Explaining her reasons for quitting the party, Kakkar pointedly remarked on how the original ideals of the AAP movement had gradually eroded. She recalled that during the nascent days of the party, leaders had categorically promised never to accept sprawling government bungalows or luxury vehicles. However, over time, the political culture shifted dramatically, with top leaders frequently opting for private chartered flights and helicopters.
She stated that she had reached a threshold where defending the indefensible was no longer possible. According to Kakkar, she drew a clear line when she witnessed the party drifting away from the foundational principles that had originally attracted common citizens to its fold.
"I left the Aam Aadmi Party because the talk was about not taking bungalows or cars, but later private choppers began to be used for travel, and I could not defend it anymore." — Priyanka Kakkar, Congress Leaderချင်းDisregard for Grassroots Workers and Merit
Laying bare her grievances regarding internal party management, Kakkar argued that while the party initially drew some of the brightest minds and most capable individuals into its fold, it ultimately failed to retain them. In their place, she claimed, individuals without any foundational grassroots experience—particularly outsiders brought in from states like Rajasthan—were being handed senior positions along with luxurious perks.
She emphasized that justifying such administrative choices to the public had become untenable for her. The disillusionment with organizational appointments catalyzed her decision to walk away from a decade-long association.
Praising Rahul Gandhi's Resilience
Following her induction into the Congress, Kakkar heaped praise on Rahul Gandhi, describing him as the most credible political leader in the country today. She commended his steadfast resilience despite facing targeted campaigns aimed at undermining his political standing.
She asserted that Gandhi has consistently championed the rights of ordinary citizens and fought fearlessly for democratic transparency without resorting to political theatrics.
Looking Ahead
Having been associated with AAP since 2013 and holding the mantle of national spokesperson since 2023, Kakkar's transition marks a notable chapter in current Indian politics. As political parties gear up for upcoming electoral battles, her inclusion in the Congress camp is expected to inject fresh rhetoric into opposition campaigns against the ruling establishment.
