Punjab Teachers Receive Notices Over Survey Duties
The burden of non-teaching duties on government school teachers in Punjab has once again triggered a major controversy. The district administration has issued show-cause notices to hundreds of teachers who refused to participate in the smart ration card verification process. In Ludhiana alone, 314 teachers received notices for being absent from a special training camp organized recently.
Teachers and their associations argue that assigning administrative tasks to educators severely compromises classroom teaching and affects the academic future of students. Meanwhile, district officials maintain a strict stance, warning of disciplinary action if assigned verification targets are not met within the stipulated timeframe.
The Scale of Non-Teaching Workloads
According to teachers' unions, smart ration card verification is merely the latest addition to a long list of non-academic assignments. Teachers are currently deployed for various government initiatives, including Booth Level Officer (BLO) electoral duties, health card distribution, drug surveys, census data collection, stubble-burning prevention monitoring, and local body elections.
With thousands of posts lying vacant across the state, existing teachers find it extremely challenging to balance administrative tasks with regular classroom responsibilities. Education Minister Harjot Singh Bains recently acknowledged in the assembly that over 31,000 teaching positions remain unfilled in Punjab government schools.
Political Backlash and Demands for Reform
The issuance of notices has drawn sharp criticism from opposition parties. Punjab Congress chief Amarinder Singh Raja Warring slammed the state government on social media, questioning the reality of the ruling party's tall claims regarding an educational revolution. Opposition leaders have demanded that teachers be immediately relieved from all non-educational duties so they can focus entirely on academics.
