Political Tensions Escalate Ahead of Rahul Gandhi's Indore Event
The commercial capital of Madhya Pradesh, Indore, has turned into a political battleground following a sharp row over security arrangements for Congress leader Rahul Gandhi's upcoming event. Scheduled for September 19, the 'Chhatron Ki Goonj' youth event has triggered a war of words between the ruling BJP and the opposition Congress after local police laid down 31 stringent security conditions for the organizers.
The controversy intensified when Congress leaders discovered that the official police document detailing the security norms cited the Verma Commission report. The report historically relates to the tragic assassination of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi's father, who was killed in a suicide bomb attack in Sriperumbudur on May 21, 1991. The opposition party has expressed deep resentment over why such sensitive historical references were invoked for a routine political rally's permission.
The Verma Commission and Security Protocols
The mention of the Verma Commission—formed to probe security lapses following Rajiv Gandhi's assassination—has brought historic security debates into local administrative protocols. Madhya Pradesh Police stated that since Rahul Gandhi holds Z-plus security status, local authorities are legally bound to enforce rigorous safety measures and clearly outline the responsibilities of event organizers.
Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police Rajesh Dandotiya explained that mentioning the historical report in security documents is aimed at reminding organizers of their critical responsibilities regarding crowd control, barricading, and managing entry and exit points to avert any untoward incidents.
Congress Slams Administration: 'BJP Crossing All Limits'
Fuming over the security document, Madhya Pradesh Congress President Jitu Patwari accused the BJP government of stooping to new lows in petty politics. He claimed that after stripping Rahul Gandhi of his SPG protection in 2019, the establishment is now using his father's assassination to mentally pressurize and intimidate him.
National Media Department Head Pawan खेड़ा also lashed out at the authorities, stating in a press address:
"Madhya Pradesh Police have crossed all limits of shamelessness. First, they tried to intimidate Rahul Gandhi ahead of his Indore event by citing the tragic assassination of his father, former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi. Meanwhile, the BJP strongly dismissed the allegations. State BJP Spokesperson Rakesh Singh Yadav stated that Congress is failing to provide transparent details regarding crowd numbers and administrative logistics to the police, adding, "The Verma Commission reference was purely a preventive step to ensure foolproof security. If any untoward incident happens, Congress would be the first to blame the administration."
