"When the police first came and put handcuffs on me, my dad was deeply shocked. With tears in his eyes, he asked, 'What are you doing to my son?' However, I had to stay strong for him." — Sanjay Dutt, Bollywood Actor
Coping With the Loss of Celebrity Privilege
Sanjay discussed how prison officials attempted to strip away his dignity by depriving him of basic comforts associated with his celebrity status. He recounted an instance where a jail staff member taunted him about not getting cigarettes inside, to which Sanjay wittily replied asking if he could get a local 'bidi' instead. This nonchalant attitude helped him survive the hostile environment without losing his sanity.
The Shadow of the 1993 Case and Legal Battle
Sanjay Dutt's legal troubles began in 1993 when he was arrested in connection with the Mumbai serial blasts for illegally possessing weapons under the TADA and Arms Act. He spent nearly 18 months as an undertrial in prison. In 2007, a special TADA court cleared him of terrorism charges but convicted him under the Arms Act, sentencing him to six years in prison.
