BJP's Aggressive Stand on Constitutional Institutions
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has launched a scathing attack on the Congress party and its leadership, accusing them of undermining constitutional bodies. Addressing a press conference, BJP National General Secretary Smriti Irani termed the recent resolutions passed by the Congress Working Committee (CWC) as a direct assault on India's democratic framework. She stated that having been repeatedly rejected by the citizens of the nation, the primary opposition party is struggling to digest its electoral failures and is consequently targeting independent institutions like the Election Commission.
Recently, the CWC meeting raised serious questions regarding the transparency of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, special intensive revision (SIR) of voter lists, and the functioning of the Chief Election Commissioner. Reacting sharply to these allegations, the BJP asserted that independent constitutional bodies are the backbone of Indian democracy and leveling baseless accusations against them sets a dangerous precedent.
Irani recalled that back in 2019, the top leadership of Congress had openly declared their intent to tarnish Prime Minister Narendra Modi's image, but the electorate responded decisively through the ballot box. She emphasized that when the public denies political support, attempting to malign the Election Commission is a sign of political desperation and immaturity.
Questions Raised Over Duplicate and Deceased Voters
Addressing the contentious issue of voter list revisions and the removal of disputed entries, the BJP questioned the underlying motives of Congress. Irani asked whether the opposition party genuinely wants deceased individuals and duplicate names to permanently remain on electoral rolls. She questioned why Congress is protesting against administrative measures aimed at cleaning up voter lists.
Defending the procedures adopted by the poll panel, the BJP highlighted that Booth Level Officers (BLOs) are meticulously verifying documents by visiting homes wherever notices have been issued. Despite these transparent measures, Congress questioning the process indicates their discomfort with a clean and flawless electoral system. The party pointed out the double standards of the opposition by citing states governed by non-BJP parties where the same election machinery functions without any objection from them.
