The Growing Mental Health Crisis Among Indian Students
The rising number of student suicides across educational institutions in India has become a matter of grave national concern. From local schools and colleges to premier engineering and medical institutes, young minds are increasingly surrendering to extreme mental distress. National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) data reveals a steep and alarming upward curve in student suicide cases over the past twenty years.
Experts point out that relentless academic competition, parental pressure, and the constant urge to outperform peers are taking a heavy toll on the mental well-being of the younger generation. While the country advances rapidly in various sectors, a silent crisis is brewing inside the minds of students who often feel isolated, overwhelmed, and hopeless.
A Decade of Surge: Over 14,000 Student Suicides in a Single Year
Looking closely at government data, the scale of the tragedy becomes evident. According to the NCRB’s 'Accidental Deaths and Suicides in India' report, student suicides stood at 5,610 in the year 2004. Over the years, this number climbed steadily, reaching a record high of 14,488 by 2024. Between 2014 and 2024 alone, over 120,000 students ended their lives across the nation.
Current statistics indicate that roughly 40 students take the extreme step every single day in India. Approximately 55 percent of these victims are male, while 45 percent are female. This growth rate in student suicides outpaces the country's general suicide growth rate, signaling fundamental flaws within the educational ecosystem and societal expectations.
The Disturbing Trend Inside Elite IIT Campuses
The Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), widely regarded as the pinnacle of academic excellence in the country, are unfortunately not immune to this tragic trend. Government data presented in Parliament revealed that 45 students died by suicide across the 23 IIT campuses between the academic years 2020-21 and 2024-25.
IIT Hyderabad recorded the highest number of such incidents with seven cases, followed closely by IIT Kharagpur, Delhi, and Kanpur with six cases each. Various RTI disclosures and alumni groups estimate that over the past two decades, nearly 170 unnatural deaths and suicides have occurred within IIT campuses, with the vast majority reported in the last ten years.
Academic Pressure and Fear of Failure
Investigations into the root causes of student suicides point toward failure in examinations, poor academic performance, and acute anxiety about future career prospects. More than 21 percent of all student suicides are directly linked to academic stress and exam failures. Furthermore, peer pressure, demanding family expectations, and an inability to cope with campus environments exacerbate the vulnerability of young scholars.
When students lack safe spaces to express their vulnerabilities, bottled-up frustration often leads to fatal decisions. Addressing this crisis requires systemic reforms rather than mere temporary measures.
