Supreme Court Collegium Recommends Three New Judges
The Supreme Court of India is set to receive three new judges soon. A five-member collegium headed by Chief Justice of India (CJI) Justice Surya Kant has recommended the promotion of three High Court Chief Justices to the apex court following a crucial meeting.
The names recommended by the collegium include Gujarat High Court Chief Justice Sunita Agarwal, Delhi High Court Chief Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya, and Telangana High Court Chief Justice Apares Kumar Singh. Once approved by the central government, these appointments will increase the total strength of Supreme Court judges to 37.
Distinguished Judicial Backgrounds
The recommended judges bring decades of rich legal and judicial experience to the highest court of the land. Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya, born in Uttar Pradesh, has served as a prominent lawyer and later as the Chief Justice of both the Bombay and Delhi High Courts. His elevation has brought immense joy to his native region.
Similarly, Justice Apares Kumar Singh has a distinguished career, having served in the Jharkhand High Court before taking charge as the Chief Justice of the Telangana High Court. The legal fraternity across various states has welcomed the collegium's decision.
Strengthening the Justice Delivery System
With an increasing backlog of cases in Indian courts, the addition of experienced judges to the Supreme Court is expected to significantly ease the judicial burden and accelerate the hearing process. The recommendations have now been forwarded to the central government for final clearance and presidential notification.
