Supreme Court Relief for Karnataka Government on KPSC Recruitment
In a significant legal development, the Supreme Court has granted major relief to the Karnataka government by staying a High Court order that had directed a fresh probe and the formation of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) into alleged irregularities in the Karnataka Public Service Commission (KPSC) recruitment.
The bench comprising Justice Manoj Mishra and Justice Vijay Bishnoi issued notices on the state government's petition challenging the High Court's earlier decision. This ruling temporarily halts the investigation process ordered by the lower court, providing breathing space to the state administration.
Background of the KPSC Veterinary Officer Recruitment Controversy
The controversy stems from the recruitment process of nearly 400 veterinary officers, which faced allegations of corruption, procedural lapses, and favoritism. Public interest litigations and petitions by aggrieved candidates led the Karnataka High Court to order a thorough investigation by an SIT, covering not just this specific exam but other KPSC recruitments as well.
Challenging this directive, the state government approached the apex court, arguing that sweeping investigations without concrete grounds can hamper administrative functioning and demoralize recruitment bodies.
Court Directives and Future Proceedings
During the hearing, the Supreme Court bench reviewed the arguments presented by the state's counsel and decided to put the High Court's directive on hold. The apex court has also sought responses from the original petitioners who had approached the High Court.
Additionally, the court instructed the state government to submit an affidavit in a sealed cover detailing any objections regarding the officials proposed for the SIT, ensuring that transparency and judicial scrutiny are maintained throughout the process.
