Nationwide Bank Strike for 3 Days: Branch Operations Paralyzed as Unions Demand 5-Day Work Week

Banking operations across the country are set to experience major interruptions as public sector bank staff launch a three-day nationwide strike. Organized under the banner of the United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU), the strike aims to pressure the government and the Indian Banks' Association (IBA) to resolve long-pending demands, primarily the formal implementation of a five-day working week for the banking sector.

Core Demands: Five-Day Work Week and Pension Revision

At the center of the dispute is the demand for establishing a five-day work week across all commercial banks. Under current industry rules, bank employees receive holidays only on the second and fourth Saturdays of each month, while the first, third, and fifth Saturdays remain regular working days. Union representatives argue that peer financial institutions like the Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC) and various global financial institutions already observe five-day schedules.

In addition to the work schedule changes, unions are pressing for comprehensive pension revisions, improvements in family pension schemes, and fresh recruitment drives to address widespread staff shortages across regional and urban branches alike.

"Bank employees are enduring tremendous work-related stress due to severe understaffing. Transitioning to a five-day work week was agreed upon in principle, yet the final notification has been withheld, forcing us to resort to agitation."— United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU) Representative

Impact on Branch Services and Commercial Transactions

While digital payment infrastructure such as UPI, IMPS, and internet banking will remain fully active, physical branch operations will grind to a halt. Essential services including clearing of physical cheques, demand draft issuances, large cash deposits and withdrawals, document verifications, and locker operations will be entirely unavailable during the strike duration.

Business sectors that rely heavily on daily cash collections and physical clearance cycles—such as wholesale commodity markets, transport hubs, and manufacturing vendors—are bracing for logistical and cash-flow bottlenecks. Local industry bodies have cautioned that delayed cheque clearances could inadvertently impact vendor payment deadlines.

Government Mitigation and ATM Availability Concerns

To reduce hardships for everyday customers, the Ministry of Finance directed public sector banks to remain operational on Sunday prior to the strike. Although some customers took advantage of the weekend opening to resolve urgent matters, many citizens remained unaware of the special Sunday window.

Financial experts advise consumers to maintain sufficient cash reserves for routine emergencies. Even though automated teller machines (ATMs) are supposed to function normally, logistics firms responsible for replenishing cash may face delays, potentially leading to cash dry-outs at high-traffic kiosks during the prolonged shutdown.
