Political Upheaval in West Bengal as TMC Faction Demands Mamata's Ouster
The internal political dynamics of West Bengal have taken a dramatic turn as factionalism within the Trinamool Congress (TMC) comes out into the open. Amid rising political realignments, the Ritabrata Banerjee-backed faction, operating under the banner of the Democratic Trinamool Congress (DTC), has expressed a strong desire to join the opposition's national platform, the INDIA bloc. However, this overture comes with a contentious caveat that has startled political circles.
The rebel faction has explicitly stated that for the national opposition alliance to remain credible and robust against the ruling dispensation, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee must be shown the door. This bold demand has instantly escalated tensions within the state's political arena, drawing sharp reactions from all quarters.
Rebel Leader Alleges TMC Undermines Anti-BJP Fight
Mohammad Akhruzzaman, a key leader of the Democratic Trinamool Congress and the opposition chief whip in the state assembly, made a direct appeal to the Congress high command, including party chief Mallikarjun Kharge and Sonia Gandhi. He leveled serious allegations against Mamata Banerjee, claiming her political trajectory has frequently favored the BJP during critical moments.
According to Akhruzzaman, Banerjee's current alignment with the INDIA bloc is merely a matter of political expediency due to her diminishing national footprint, and she could easily pivot back to the NDA if circumstances required. The rebel faction argues that her inclusion compromises the ideological integrity of the united opposition.
"If Congress truly wishes to mount an uncompromised fight against the BJP, it must first expel Mamata Banerjee from the INDIA alliance. Her historical and current track record suggests a soft corner for saffron forces during crises. If the alliance leadership drops her, we are ready to strengthen this platform immediately." — Mohammad Akhruzzaman, Leader, Democratic Trinamool Congress
TMC Leadership Dismisses Allegations as Proxy Politics
In sharp contrast, the official Trinamool Congress leadership has vehemently rejected these claims. TMC legislator and close aide of the Chief Minister, Kunal Ghosh, dismissed the statements as a desperate attempt by disgruntled elements to stay relevant. He asserted that those questioning Mamata Banerjee's anti-BJP credentials today rose to political prominence solely under her shadow.
Ghosh labeled the rebel faction as proxies acting at the behest of external political forces aiming to destabilize the state government. He emphasized that Banerjee has been at the forefront of democratic struggles against communal politics for decades, earning widespread public trust.
Election Commission Formalizes the Split
This war of words unfolds as the Election Commission of India has recognized the deep division within the party by allotting interim names and symbols for upcoming bypolls. While the official faction retains the legacy identity under a modified banner with a 'football player' symbol, the rebel DTC camp has been assigned the 'envelope' symbol.
Political analysts suggest that while these developments highlight severe friction within regional opposition ranks, they could also trigger broader strategic re-evaluations within the national INDIA bloc as state-level equations continue to shift rapidly.
