Political Tensions Rise Over Seat Sharing In Uttar Pradesh
As Uttar Pradesh prepares for upcoming electoral battles, friction within the opposition alliance regarding seat distribution has come out into the open. Leaders from both the Samajwadi Party and the Congress are increasingly vocal about their respective electoral strengths, creating hurdles in forging a unified front. The ongoing verbal exchanges highlight the underlying complexities of seat-sharing negotiations ahead of crucial state polls.
In a sharp critique, Samajwadi Party MP from Pratapgarh, Shivpal Singh Patel, launched a scathing attack on the grand old party. He argued that allocating more than fifty seats to Congress in Uttar Pradesh would be counterproductive, citing the party's modest strike rates in the 2022 and 2024 elections. According to him, Congress lacks both a dedicated cadre and a robust ground presence in the state, making large seat demands unrealistic.
Controversial Claims Over Amethi And Raebareli Lok Sabha Polls
The SP leader went a step further by commenting on Rahul Gandhi's electoral strategy during the 2024 general elections. He claimed that Gandhi had practically abandoned Amethi and was initially extremely reluctant to contest even from Raebareli, preferring to focus entirely on southern constituencies. It was only after intervention by SP chief Akhilesh Yadav, who convinced him to honor his traditional family seat, that Gandhi reportedly agreed to enter the fray.
Patel emphasized that the local victory was made possible solely due to the rigorous groundwork and mobilization carried out by Samajwadi Party cadres and supporters. He suggested that Congress heavily relies on its regional allies in the state rather than its independent political footprint.
Congress Demands A Larger Share While SP Emphasizes Victory Over Numbers
Countering these assertions, Uttar Pradesh Congress leaders have maintained that the party deserves a significant chunk of seats, with some state functionaries suggesting a demand of 150 to 200 seats based on historical contributions and organizational legacy. This has further fueled disagreements between the two primary alliance partners.
Amidst the growing war of words, Samajwadi Party Chief Akhilesh Yadav has issued a unifying message, emphasizing that the focus should remain firmly on ensuring a collective electoral victory against communal forces rather than bickering over seat numbers. Political analysts note that bridging this gap will be crucial for the alliance's future prospects in the state.
