Mumbai-style local trains to soon run in Uttar Pradesh
In a major relief for daily commuters in Uttar Pradesh, the North Eastern Railway (NER) has initiated steps to introduce local and MEMU train services similar to those in Mumbai, Kolkata, and Delhi. Recognizing the massive passenger rush and the high number of Monthly Season Ticket (MST) holders, the railway administration has sought route details from the Varanasi and Lucknow divisions.
This initiative is expected to immensely benefit working professionals, small traders, and students who travel daily between nearby cities and major hubs. Currently, long-distance express trains are heavily crowded, making daily commutes stressful. The introduction of local trains will provide a reliable, frequent, and affordable transportation alternative.
Focus on high-density routes in Varanasi and Lucknow
The Varanasi and Lucknow divisions have been identified as the primary focus zones for this project. The railway board directed authorities to compile data on congested routes. NER has already forwarded proposed station names and routes to the railway board for final approval.
Once approved, these local trains will operate at shorter intervals, significantly reducing waiting times at platforms. The fare for these MEMU and local services will remain consistent with standard passenger train rates, ensuring it stays light on the common man's pocket.
Festival special trains announced to clear rush
Amidst preparations for local trains, the North Eastern Railway has also announced several festival special trains to manage the heavy passenger rush during upcoming festivals like Diwali and Chhath. Long-distance trains such as Shramjevi Express, Garib Rath, and various special services are already showing 'no room' status with waiting lists crossing 100 on multiple routes.

New special trains between Mau and Ambala Cantt, Yog Nagari Rishikesh and Kolkata, and Amritsar to destinations like Baruni and Kolkata have been scheduled to operate through October and November, easing travel burdens for stranded passengers.
