Food Politics in India: Why Did Suggestions to Avoid Non-Veg During Durga Puja Spark Outrage in Bengal?

The Intersection of Food and Politics

In contemporary times, political propaganda and ideological agendas frequently influence societal perspectives. Dietary habits have increasingly become tools in the hands of divisive political trends. Arguments are often made associating specific eating habits with particular communities or behaviors. The politicization of sacred cows and beef consumption has led to various social tensions and incidents across the country.

Housing societies inquiring about a buyer's dietary habits before granting permission to purchase flats has also become a growing trend. This social segregation is no longer limited to urban areas; it has expanded into complex forms during festivals and cultural gatherings. Recently, a similar controversy unfolded in West Bengal, where suggestions were made to keep non-vegetarian food items away from Puja pandals and idols during Durga Puja.

The West Bengal Durga Puja and Non-Veg Controversy

West Bengal is gearing up for its biggest festival, Durga Puja. Following recent political shifts, the nature of political and cultural activities in the state has also transformed. In this context, Bageshwar Dham chief Dhirendra Krishna Shastri was invited to the state, where he advised people during a Hanuman Katha in Howrah's Liluah to keep non-vegetarian food items away from the goddess's idol during the festival.

Similar consultations had previously been issued by affiliates of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). This advice triggered widespread resentment among Bengali Hindus, including those who identify as Hindu nationalists. Several prominent Bengalis raised their voices and stated that outsiders should not dictate how they celebrate their festivals or what they should eat.

Deep Roots of Bengali Culture and Cuisine

Dishes made from fish and mutton are considered an essential part of Bengali Durga Puja celebrations. Fish holds a significant place in Bengali culture, and non-vegetarian food is traditionally part of several religious rituals. Figures ranging from former Tripura Governor Tathagata Roy to local content creators and intellectuals openly protested against this outside interference.

Kolkata-based content creator Sreyasi Biswas Banerjee wrote on social media that Bengalis should not be told how to celebrate Durga Puja. Political figures like Suvendu Adhikari also participated in events where they consumed fried fish as prasad, signaling that food is an integral element of regional culture.

The National Debate Over Vegetarianism

India is a diverse nation with vast differences in language, attire, religion, and cuisine. Geographical conditions heavily determine dietary habits, such as seafood being a major part of coastal diets. Kashmiri Brahmins also traditionally consume non-vegetarian dishes. However, in recent years, government policies and official events have increasingly prioritized vegetarianism.

Political debates erupted when only vegetarian food was served during official dinners at international events like the BRICS summit. While the opposition criticized this, government representatives defended it. Such instances indicate an official push toward projecting India predominantly as a vegetarian nation.

Conclusion

Dietary habits are matters of personal choice, geography, and cultural tradition. Politicizing them creates unnecessary social polarization. The events in West Bengal demonstrate that efforts to impose a singular lifestyle or diet in a diverse country like India face strong resistance, emphasizing the need to respect regional autonomy and cultural diversity.
