Political dynamics in Punjab are set for a major shift as the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) signals a change in its approach toward state-level alliances. Senior BJP leader and Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri has made it clear that any future electoral alliance with the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) will be on equal terms, firmly rejecting the party's historical role as a junior partner in the state.
A Strong Message from Amritsar
Addressing the media in Amritsar, Puri asserted that the old political equations of Punjab no longer apply. Historically, out of the 117 assembly seats in the state, the BJP traditionally contested only 22 to 23 seats while the Akali Dal contested the rest. Puri emphasized that times have changed, the party's footprint has expanded, and the old seat-sharing formula is a thing of the past.
The 50-50 Formula Discussion
Political analysts view Puri's remarks as a strategic push for better bargaining power. Following speculation about a potential rapprochement between the BJP and the Akali Dal after the exit over the 2020 farm laws, the BJP is keen to establish that it will not compromise on its political standing in Punjab anymore.

In addition to alliance talks, Puri launched a scathing attack on the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government in Punjab, alleging a complete breakdown of law and order under Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann. He stated that the state government has failed to curb the drug menace and provide adequate employment opportunities for the youth.
