Experts believe that amid shifting global supply chains, India is emerging as a reliable alternative. With proactive central policies and active state cooperation, a robust semiconductor ecosystem is taking shape. Over 600 companies from 52 countries and more than 40,000 visitors participated in the summit, underscoring the immense potential of India's tech landscape.
Semicon 2.0 Scheme and USD 12 Billion Investment Projections
To bolster chip manufacturing, the central government has rolled out the 'Semicon 2.0' scheme, allocating a substantial corpus of Rs 1.27 trillion. Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw expressed optimism that investment proposals worth approximately USD 12 billion will soon materialize on the ground. Several global semiconductor giants have already established offices in India, and local production units are coming up at a rapid pace.
Prominent names like Applied Materials have committed investments worth Rs 48,000 crore, while Lam Research has pledged Rs 10,000 crore. Additionally, global lithography giant ASML has opened its new office in India. Tata Electronics Leads the Charge with Plants in Gujarat and Assam
Tata Electronics has made a landmark move in the semiconductor domain by investing a staggering Rs 1.18 trillion for advanced facilities in Dholera, Gujarat, and the northeastern state of Assam. Tata Electronics has become the anchor customer for India's first 300-millimeter semiconductor fab, boasting a production capacity of 50,000 wafers per month.
This initiative will be a game-changer for India, securing domestic chip supplies for critical sectors like automotive, telecommunications, consumer electronics, and defense. It will significantly cut down import dependence and safeguard foreign exchange reserves.
Roadmap for Viksit Bharat: Finance Ministry's Two-Day Conclave with States
On the economic policy front, the Ministry of Finance organized a crucial two-day brainstorming conclave to align policy priorities toward the 'Viksit Bharat 2047' vision. The high-level meeting witnessed the participation of the Union Finance Minister alongside several state chief ministers, deputy CMs, and finance ministers.
Following the deliberations, Anuradha Thakur, Secretary of the Department of Economic Affairs, emphasized that deep partnership between the Centre and states is imperative for a developed India. She noted that government budgets alone will not suffice and private sector financing will play a critical catalytic role.

Chief Economic Adviser V. Anantha Nageswaran highlighted during his keynote address that a developed India relies heavily on developed states. He underlined creating an investor-friendly ecosystem, improving investment quality, and ramping up capital expenditure as top priorities for states, urging them to target capital spending of 3 percent of GSDP by 2031-32.
