Historic rise and initial struggle of TMC in West Bengal politics
The journey of Trinamool Congress (TMC) in West Bengal politics started in the year 1998. During that period, the Left Front dominated the politics of the state and the Congress Party used to be in the role of the main opposition party. Mamata Banerjee decided to form a new political party due to dissatisfaction and ideological differences within the Congress Party. His step proved to be the beginning of a new era in Bengal politics. Mamata Banerjee chose the name 'Trinamool Congress' for her party, which directly meant grassroots Congress.
The initial days of the formation of the party were not easy at all. Setting up the organization as a new political party, uniting the workers and getting recognition from the Election Commission were big challenges. Mamata Banerjee started making inroads among the general public with her aggressive working style and policy of taking to the streets on issues of public interest. The party faced many difficulties in the initial Lok Sabha and Assembly elections, but Mamata Banerjee's grassroots connections became stronger and the party gradually started emerging as a strong political force.
Nandigram and Singur movement: Turning point in Mamata Banerjee's political life
The time between 2006 and 2008 is considered to be the most important in the political journey of Trinamool Congress. During this period, large-scale farmer movements took place against the acquisition of agricultural land in Singur for Tata's Nano car factory and the proposed chemical hub in Nandigram. Mamata Banerjee took up the front against the forcible acquisition of farmers' lands by the Left Front government. He fasted for months and took out rallies across the state to protest strongly against the policies of the government.
These movements completely changed the political equations of West Bengal. The farmers, intellectuals and general public of the state stood firmly with Mamata Banerjee. These mass movements brought TMC to the center of Bengal politics. TMC transformed the discontent against the policies of the Left Front into a big political platform, thereby preparing the ground for the 2011 assembly elections. These struggles established Mamata Banerjee as the invincible leader of Bengal.
The historical change of 2011 and the fall of the 34-year-old fortress of the Left Front
The year 2011 assembly elections proved to be the biggest milestone in the electoral history of West Bengal. In this election, Trinamool Congress contested the elections in alliance with the Congress Party and won a huge majority. TMC, under the leadership of Mamata Banerjee, overthrew the 34-year-old Left Front regime, which was counted among the world's longest democratically ruled communist governments. This victory created a stir in Indian politics and Mamata Banerjee's political strength was considered strong at the national level.
After assuming power in the state, the Trinamool Congress government launched several populist and developmental schemes. Schemes like Kanyashree, Cycle Distribution Scheme and Swasthya Sathi for the poor made the TMC government extremely popular in rural Bengal and among women. However, after coming to power, the party faced administrative challenges as well as the responsibility of handling the opposition parties. Mamata Banerjee further consolidated her power by securing landslide victories in two more consecutive assembly elections (2016 and 2021).
Expansion and new role of TMC in national politics
After winning power in West Bengal for three consecutive terms, Trinamool Congress started efforts to increase its interference in national politics. Mamata Banerjee played an important role in uniting the opposition parties across the country. The party tried to expand its foothold in states like Tripura, Assam, Meghalaya and Goa, so as to present itself as a national alternative. However, outside Bengal, TMC did not get the same huge success in elections as it has in its home state.
Despite this, TMC MPs have always played a vocal role on important issues in the national parliament. Mamata Banerjee's party has registered strong protest inside and outside the Parliament against many policies of the Central Government. The role of TMC and Mamata Banerjee has also been very important in the formation of the opposition alliance 'India'. The party is continuously struggling to strengthen its ideological and political identity at the national level and is making its presence felt as a strong regional force on the political scene of the country.
Current political challenges and the way forward
Today, the challenges of a new era of politics are facing Trinamool Congress. Opposition parties are constantly trying to corner the government on corruption issues and law and order issues. The action of central investigating agencies against many party leaders has created a stir in political circles. In such a situation, Mamata Banerjee and the TMC leadership have the double responsibility of keeping the organization united and maintaining their clean image among the public.
""Politics is made by the faith and struggle of the people. We have been fighting for the rights and well-being of the people of Bengal in every situation and will continue to fight in future too. The public is our biggest strength." — Mamata Banerjee, Supremo, Trinamool Congress"
In the coming days, the biggest test for TMC will be to preserve its political ground and keep itself relevant amidst the new political equations. The mood of the people of Bengal has always been politically conscious and they closely assess the functioning of every party. This is the time for Trinamool Congress to introspect and further strengthen the organization at the grassroots level, so that they can further strengthen their hold in the coming elections.
