One Year Since the Tragic Passing of Zubeen Garg
It has been a year since the beloved Assamese singer Zubeen Garg passed away under mysterious circumstances in Singapore, yet the grief and questions surrounding his death remain as raw as ever. Last year on September 19, Zubeen was in Singapore ahead of the North East India Festival when he joined a private yacht outing near Lazarus Island.
According to reports, he entered the water twice and became unresponsive during his second swim. Despite immediate medical assistance, he was pronounced dead at Singapore General Hospital. While Singapore authorities ruled it an accidental drowning due to heavy intoxication and removal of his life jacket, fans back home suspected foul play.
The Outcry and SIT Investigation in Assam
The news of his death shook Assam to its core, drawing over 1.5 million people to his final journey in Kamarkuchi, Sonapur. As grief turned into suspicion, more than 60 FIRs were lodged across the state. The Assam government formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT), which eventually pivoted the probe into a murder case.
By October, Assam Police arrested seven individuals, including festival organizer Shyamkanu Mahanta, manager Siddhartha Sharma, and family members, charging them with murder, criminal conspiracy, and culpable homicide.
Divergent Legal Conclusions and Lasting Legacy
While a Singapore coroner officially ruled the death an accidental drowning in March 2026 and closed the probe, the trial in Assam has moved forward with a fast-track court framing charges against all seven accused who pleaded not guilty.
Despite the legal battles, Zubeen's legacy continues to thrive. The Assam government allotted land for 'Zubeen Kshetra', a permanent memorial in Kamarkuchi, while tributes poured in from national and international artists, cementing his status as an eternal musical legend of India.
