Is Pakistan Preparing an Exile Deal for Jailed Former PM Imran Khan?
The political landscape in Pakistan has once again intensified as speculations grow regarding the future of jailed Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder and former Prime Minister Imran Khan. Mahmood Khan Achakzai, the Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly and chief of the Pakhtunkhwa Milli Awami Party (PKMAP), has made a sensational claim during a press conference in Peshawar.
Achakzai stated that the current ruling coalition is mounting severe pressure on Imran Khan to accept a political settlement that involves leaving the country, much like past Prime Ministers. This statement has sent ripples through the political corridors of Islamabad.
Drawing Parallels With Nawaz Sharif and Benazir Bhutto
Backing his claims, the senior opposition leader recalled historical precedents in Pakistani politics. He pointed out how former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif was allowed to leave for Saudi Arabia in 2000 following a military coup led by General Pervez Musharraf, mediated by foreign leaders.
Similarly, Benazir Bhutto spent years in self-imposed exile in London and Dubai following political turmoil and corruption charges in the late 1990s. Achakzai alleged that the current political establishment is attempting to replicate this exact formula to sideline Imran Khan permanently from active national politics.
Imran Khan's Legal Battles and Incarceration
Imran Khan, 73, has been behind bars since August 2023, following his initial arrest in the Toshakhana corruption case. Since then, his legal troubles have multiplied exponentially with nearly 200 cases registered against him, ranging from state secrets leaks to corruption and marriage-related charges.
Despite being imprisoned for over a year and a half, Khan continues to command massive grassroots support, posing a persistent challenge to the ruling government and the military establishment.
"The current ruling coalition is trying to repeat the same political formula with Imran Khan that was used in the past against Nawaz Sharif and Benazir Bhutto. Pressure is being mounted on him." — Mahmood Khan Achakzai, Opposition Leader
Uncertainty Ahead in Pakistani Politics
While Achakzai did not confirm whether Imran Khan has agreed to any such proposal, the allegations highlight the deep-seated polarization within the country. As Pakistan grapples with severe economic and security crises, the fate of its most popular political prisoner remains a central pivot of national uncertainty.
