Sri Lanka Announces 15-Member Squad for Asian Games 2026
Sri Lanka Cricket has officially announced its 15-member T20 International squad for the upcoming Asian Games 2026. The selection committee has opted for a balanced mix of youth and experience. All-rounder Sahan Arachchige has been entrusted with the captaincy, having previously led the side in the last edition of the Asian Games.
The squad features some surprise inclusions and exclusions. While several core T20 players have been rested, the selectors have decided to bring back seasoned campaigners to add stability and depth to the batting lineup in Asian conditions.
The Comeback of Niroshan Dickwella and Ashen Bandara
The biggest talking point of this squad announcement is the return of experienced wicketkeeper-batsman Niroshan Dickwella and middle-order batter Ashen Bandara. While Bandara last played an international match in 2023, Dickwella's last T20I appearance dates back to 2021.
Both players had an underwhelming run in the recently concluded Lanka Premier League (LPL 2026). Bandara scored only 28 runs in three matches for Colombo Caps, while Dickwella managed just 110 runs for Dambulla Sixers. Despite poor domestic form, selectors have backed them based on their vast international exposure.
Focus on Spin and Direct Quarterfinal Entry
Sri Lanka has heavily bolstered its spin department, keeping Asian pitches in mind. Captain Sahan Arachchige, along with leg-spinners Vijayakanth Viyaskanth, Dushan Hemantha, and Tharindu Ratnayake, form a potent spin attack. Fast bowlers Nuwan Thushara and Binura Fernando will spearhead the pace department.
Sri Lanka has received a direct qualification to the quarterfinals of the Asian Games 2026. They will play their opening match on September 29, aiming for a strong podium finish under Arachchige's leadership.
