An unexpected rise in the water level of the Gomti River in Lucknow created panic as floodwaters reached near prominent commercial and residential zones, including a major stadium and a popular shopping mall. A video capturing the extent of the waterlogging and the subsequent administrative response has been widely circulating across social media platforms.
Recognizing the urgency of the situation, teams from the Lucknow Development Authority (LDA) and the local traffic police swiftly took charge. Officials constructed check-dams using heavy machinery and boulder pitching to successfully curb the inflow of water, bringing the situation under rapid control.
Backflow from Drains Aggravates Waterlogging
Although the river's water level remained below the danger mark, mounting pressure caused a reverse backflow through connected urban drains. This backflow triggered severe waterlogging along the Shaheed Path service lane, behind the stadium, and near the Phoenix Palassio Mall. As a precautionary safety measure, authorities barricaded the service lane leading towards the mall to prevent vehicular mishaps.
24/7 Administration Vigilance and Helplines
The LDA demonstrated proactive preparedness by deploying engineers and officials in round-the-clock shifts starting early October. Quick communication networks allowed enforcement teams to rush to the spot as soon as water started trickling into residential sectors. Special emergency contact numbers were also activated to assist citizens facing water-related distress.
Despite water accumulation along peripheral stretches, traffic police ensured that critical underpasses remained clear and operational. Continuous patrolling by senior traffic officials prevented major gridlocks, ensuring that daily commuters faced minimal disruption during the crisis.
