In a major boost to India's telecom manufacturing sector, Union Home Minister Amit Shah will lay the foundation stone for Asia's first 'Telephone Manufacturing Zone' (TMZ) in Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh, on October 29. Over 24 global companies that have committed investments to this ambitious project are set to participate in the groundbreaking ceremony.
A New Hub for Telecom Manufacturing
Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia earlier reviewed the site at the Shrimant Madhavrao Scindia Counter Magnet City (SADA) and confirmed that 24 companies have submitted investment proposals totaling Rs 5,500 crore, which will create approximately 18,000 jobs. The project aims to build a comprehensive industrial ecosystem encompassing design, R&D, testing, innovation, and manufacturing of telecom equipment.
Plug-and-Play Model and Central Support
The TMZ is being developed under a specialized 'plug-and-play' model, similar to a Special Economic Zone (SEZ), providing ready-to-use infrastructure for manufacturing units. The central government is providing 100% financial assistance of Rs 493 crore for the first phase of infrastructure development, while the Madhya Pradesh government has provided approximately 170 acres of land free of cost.
