In a major welfare move, the Yogi Adityanath government in Uttar Pradesh is preparing to increase the monthly pension for senior citizens, destitute women, and persons with disabilities from Rs 1,000 to Rs 1,500. The proposal has already received in-principle approval and is expected to be placed before the state cabinet soon for final clearance, directly impacting over 1.21 million beneficiaries.
An Extra Rs 500 Every Month
According to the proposal, the pension amount will be hiked by Rs 500 per month. This means beneficiaries will receive Rs 18,000 annually instead of the current Rs 12,000, translating to an additional benefit of Rs 6,000 per year for each recipient. The increased payout is expected to roll out following formal budgetary provisions in the upcoming supplementary budget session.
Direct Benefit to Over 1.21 Crore People
The proposed hike will cover three major social welfare pension schemes in the state, including over 6.7 million elderly beneficiaries, 4.2 million destitute women, and around 1.2 million differently-abled individuals. This marks the first major revision in these welfare schemes since 2017, aimed at providing stronger financial security to vulnerable sections of society.
