Elon Musk Slams Delay in Starlink's India Entry, Alleges Monopoly Tactics by Oligarchs

SpaceX's satellite internet venture, Starlink, is facing renewed hurdles in its quest to launch commercial services in India, prompting a sharp reaction from founder Elon Musk. Expressing deep frustration over ongoing regulatory delays, Musk took to social media to allege that unnamed Indian oligarchs are blocking Starlink to maintain their ironclad monopoly over the country's telecommunications market.

While the Indian government has already issued letters of intent or licenses to three satellite communication entities, including Starlink, the company is still awaiting final approvals to officially roll out its high-speed broadband services to consumers.

The Digital Divide and Musk's Allegations

Musk's comments came in response to a post discussing how India urgently needs satellite connectivity to bridge the digital gap in remote regions where laying traditional fiber-optic or telecom infrastructure is practically unfeasible. "Unfortunately, we are blocked by some oligarchs so that their monopoly grip on Indian people can be maintained. You can guess who they are," Musk posted, adding that obstructing progress is a disservice to citizens.

Statistics highlight the persistent connectivity gap in rural versus urban India, where millions of citizens still lack robust high-speed mobile or broadband coverage, emphasizing the transformative potential that low-earth orbit satellite constellations like Starlink could bring.

Starlink's Readiness and Security Assurances

Addressing security and compliance concerns, Starlink's Vice President of Business Operations, Lauren Dreyer, previously stated at the India Mobile Congress that the company has built robust, India-specific security controls. Starlink has already set up 20 gateway sites equipped with hundreds of antennas across the country, ensuring that all Indian user data remains strictly localized.

Dreyer emphasized that Starlink has spent five years closely collaborating with Indian regulators, industry stakeholders, and telecom operators. With heavy investments already deployed, the company maintains it is fully equipped and eager to support India's exponential digital growth story.
