Jack Dorsey's Offline Messaging App Bitchat Removed from Indian App Store

In a significant development concerning digital policy and cyber security, Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey's decentralized offline messaging application, Bitchat, has been officially removed from the Apple App Store in India. The tech entrepreneur took to the social media platform X (formerly Twitter) to confirm the development, sharing screenshots of the notice sent by Apple's review team.

According to the official communication from Apple, the application was targeted because it allegedly contains content deemed illegal within India and fails to comply with local App Store review guidelines. While the app remains accessible in several other global markets, even its test versions have been completely blocked for users located in India.

The Enforcement of IT Act Section 69(A)

The restriction was enforced following formal requests made by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) under Section 69(A) of the Information Technology Act, 2000. This legal provision empowers the central government to block public access to any digital content or application in the interest of India's sovereignty, integrity, defense, security, and public order.

Earlier in the year, similar concerns were raised by the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C), an arm of the Ministry of Home Affairs, which had previously flagged related code repositories on platforms like GitHub. Law enforcement agencies have repeatedly expressed deep apprehension over apps that bypass traditional telecommunication networks.

Understanding Bitchat and Its Unique Mechanics

Bitchat operates entirely differently from mainstream messaging platforms like WhatsApp or Signal. Designed primarily as a peer-to-peer (P2P) mesh networking tool, it allows users to exchange encrypted messages without relying on cellular data, Wi-Fi routers, or active internet connectivity, utilizing local Bluetooth signals instead.

While the app gained immense popularity among GenZ users and participants during recent civil protests globally due to its resistance against internet shutdowns, its decentralized nature presents severe challenges for regulatory bodies and security agencies attempting to trace illicit communications.

Conclusion

The removal of Bitchat from the Indian digital ecosystem highlights the unwavering stance of the government toward national security and regulatory compliance in the tech sector, setting a firm precedent for decentralized communication platforms operating within the country.
