Maruti Suzuki's Big Move Towards Affordable Car Safety
India's largest car manufacturer, Maruti Suzuki, is preparing a visionary roadmap to bring advanced safety features into its budget-friendly vehicle lineup. In the near future, the company is considering making the Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) a standard offering across its affordable models, democratizing high-end automotive safety for the common masses.
With traffic congestion and road accidents remaining a major concern on Indian roads, automakers face a growing responsibility to prioritize passenger safety beyond just fuel efficiency and pricing. Maruti Suzuki aims to address this critical issue by integrating life-saving technologies into its core manufacturing strategy.
The Right ADAS Approach and Cost Reduction Strategy
The biggest challenge in bringing advanced tech to affordable cars is managing production costs. To tackle this, Suzuki has formulated a 'Right ADAS Approach', focusing on essential accident-prevention features like automatic emergency braking and lane departure prevention while keeping additional comfort amenities reserved for higher variants.
Suzuki's Chief Technology Officer, Katsuhiro Kato, emphasized that restricting expensive ADAS systems exclusively to luxury vehicles will not effectively reduce overall road accidents. By utilizing high-resolution cameras, AI chips, and driver-monitoring integrations, the company aims to significantly cut down implementation costs without compromising on safety standards.
Simplified Electronic Architecture and Future Engines
As part of its software-defined vehicle strategy, Suzuki is also working on simplifying vehicle electronic architectures by incorporating communication, power distribution, and body controls into a central zone ECU. Furthermore, the Japanese automaker is developing new 1.2-litre and 1.5-litre turbocharged direct-injection petrol engines capable of supporting alternative fuels like ethanol blends, CNG, and CBG to meet upcoming environmental and efficiency targets.
