The Deepest Market Correction in Over Two Decades

The Indian equity market is currently navigating through one of its most challenging phases in recent history. Investors are facing severe anxiety as benchmark indices, Sensex and Nifty, continue to close in the red for eight consecutive weeks. According to financial analysts, this marks the longest weekly losing streak for the domestic market in nearly 25 years, surpassing even the prolonged downturns witnessed during the 2020 COVID-19 crash and the 2008 global financial crisis.

This relentless correction has eroded substantial investor wealth. The total market capitalization of companies listed on the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) has dropped significantly, falling below the Rs 467 lakh crore mark. Over the past two months of continuous decline, investors have collectively lost more than Rs 26 lakh crore, impacting portfolios across retail and institutional segments alike.

Relentless FII Outflows and Rising Bond Yields

The primary driver behind this persistent market pressure is the aggressive selling by Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs). Foreign portfolio investors have consistently pulled out massive amounts of capital from Indian equities, severely dampening market sentiment. In recent trading sessions, foreign net outflows crossed tens of thousands of crores, triggering a domino effect across major sectors.

Additionally, a sharp surge in global bond yields has added to the woes. With US Treasury yields touching multi-year highs, safer debt instruments have become considerably more attractive for international funds. Consequently, global capital has been shifting away from emerging markets like India toward lower-risk fixed-income assets, placing heavy downward pressure on riskier asset classes.

Sectoral Impact and DII Support

The eight-week downturn has impacted nearly all major sectors, with automobiles, information technology, and financial services bearing the brunt of the selling pressure. Heavyweights such as Tata Motors, Maruti Suzuki, and TCS recorded notable declines as selling intensified at higher levels. Investors experienced considerable erosion in portfolio values as frontline stocks slipped from their previous peaks.

However, Domestic Institutional Investors (DIIs) have continuously stepped in to cushion the fall. Whenever foreign capital exodus accelerated, domestic mutual funds and institutional buyers provided necessary liquidity by pumping funds into the market. Selected defensive stocks and banking counters also showed relative resilience, helping mitigate some of the broader market losses.

Macroeconomic Headwinds and Outlook

Beyond capital flows, macroeconomic factors such as fluctuating crude oil prices and currency depreciation continue to pose challenges for the domestic economy. As an energy-importing nation, high global oil prices threaten to widen the trade deficit and stoke inflationary pressures, which in turn influence central bank monetary policies.

Market experts suggest that until global uncertainties stabilize and foreign institutional investors reverse their selling trend, Indian indices may continue to experience heightened volatility. Long-term investors, however, are advised to focus on fundamentally strong companies rather than reacting to short-term panic.
