Stock Markets Closed for Gandhi Jayanti and Weekend
Indian stock exchanges, including the National Stock Exchange (NSE) and the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), remained closed on Friday on account of Mahatma Gandhi Jayanti. Investors could not execute trades in equity, equity derivatives, and other related segments due to the public holiday.
Commodity trading on the Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX) was also suspended for both morning and evening sessions. With Saturday and Sunday following immediately, the financial markets will experience a three-day consecutive shutdown before resuming normal trading operations.
Sensex and Nifty Register Eighth Consecutive Weekly Decline
The broader market sentiment has been under severe pressure, with benchmark indices closing in the red for the eighth straight week. This marks the longest losing streak for the domestic market in the past 25 years, reminiscent of a similar downturn seen back in 2001.
Massive selling by foreign institutional investors and persistent macroeconomic headwinds have pushed indices down significantly from their all-time highs. Analysts note that further downside risks remain unless structural buying support emerges from domestic institutional investors.
Digital Banking Services Remain Fully Operational
While bank branches remained shut for the national holiday, digital financial infrastructure ensured seamless transactions for citizens. UPI, internet banking, mobile applications, and ATMs continued to function without any disruption, preventing inconvenience to the public.
