However, amidst the festive preparations, a peculiar and concerning trend has taken over social media platforms: advertisements offering 'Rent A Garba Partner' for various packages.
These viral posts claim that individuals who do not have a partner to play garba with can book one by paying a specific fee. While some internet users initially took it lightly as a meme or publicity stunt, cybersecurity agencies have viewed the matter with serious concern, warning that it could be a fresh trap set by cybercriminals to dupe unsuspecting citizens.
Silver, Gold, and Platinum Packages Offered
The viral advertisements categorize the offerings into structured corporate-style packages. The 'Silver Package' demands 1,000 rupees for a two-hour partner, the 'Gold Package' asks for 1,500 rupees for four hours, and the 'Platinum Package' charges 2,000 rupees for a full-night garba partner. Additional perks like basic garba steps training, matching costumes, and selfie opportunities are promised to lure victims.
Police and Authorities Warn Citizens
Ahmedabad Cyber Crime ACP Hardik Mankadiya stated that over the past few days, numerous such posts have surfaced. While initial investigations revealed some profiles posted them merely for social media reach, subsequent posts were found to be AI-generated and potentially linked to financial scams. Authorities have strongly urged citizens not to transfer money to unverified social media handles and to report any suspicious activities immediately to cyber crime portals.
